Corey Rich: "Several years back, I had the great fortune of traveling down the Colorado River for over 20 days with some of my best friends: Tommy Caldwell, Beth Rodden, Josh Lowell, Peter Mortimer, Chris McNamara, and writer Dan Duane. The plan was to raft the river, exploring the Grand Canyon for climbing opportunities, specifically looking for first ascents in the layered rock. We started the trip late in the season, so the sun was low, seldom shining directly into the canyon. We ended up wearing fleece and Gore-Tex while traveling on the rafts with the occasional blast of cold water soaking all of us. We had a fantastic group of guides and boatmen from Outdoors Unlimited who led our commercial chartered trip through the canyon.
"This trip provided opportunity after opportunity to shoot. The light was amazing! In the end, the still photos from this trip appeared in many print publications including Dan's story for Men's Journal and a feature in Alpinist written by Tommy, as well as a print campaign for Marmot. Additionally, Josh Lowell and Peter Mortimer shot a segment for NBC World of Adventure. All in all, this was a fantastic trip with lots of great light. This photo was shot near the end of the trip. There were some forest fires near the canyon rim, creating the effect of the light filtering through the smoke. Tommy Caldwell is shown tossing a rope off the top of a cliff after one of many first ascents in the Grand Canyon. I exposed for the highlights in the background so that Tommy and the uncoiling rope would be captured in silhouette, creating a nice graphic element."
