This week we present to you the lovely KENZIE VICTORY as our Friday Featured photographer. Kenzie is a Utah based wedding photographer and does beautiful film + digital work, with a very timeless, clean look to her photos. Kenzie is so good at capturing those raw and real moments that every couple wants to remember from their wedding day.
What is your go-to camera? + Do you feel like it’s necessary to always have a back-up camera body at weddings?
My go to camera is the Canon 5d Mark III with the 50mm 1.2 for digital and the Pentax 645n for Film. I absolutely think it is necessary to have a back-up camera body at weddings. Your job and opportunity is to capture two people's most important day of your life. I have heard so many horror stories of photographers who have had their camera stop working on them right before the day begins. This would be terrifying to me if I didn't have my back-up camera. Investing in your business (such as having a back-up camera) is one of the best things you can do to keep your business progressing and making money.
What is your favorite part about being a photographer?
Because I specialize in weddings, one of my favorite parts of being a wedding photographer is seeing the bride in her wedding dress for the first time. A bride in her wedding dress glows. Not to be cheesy, but it's true! It is so fun to see them look and feel like a bride when the long anticipated day comes that they get to put on their wedding dress.
Is there a specific lens you use more than any other?
This may sound shocking to most, but I shoot almost 99% of my work on my 50mm 1.2. I think one of the most important parts of being a wedding photographer is showing consistent work so that your clients know what to expect. My 50 gives me the romantic feel I am going for while also keeping everything consistent. I also love the challenge of shooting on a prime lens. It makes me think differently and always moving to compose each shot uniquely.
How do you find such beautiful locations to shoot at?
LOCATION SCOUTING! I spend hours driving in the car on my days off. My clients know me for my field and meadow pictures, and I don't want to get bored shooting at the same locations so I am always on the lookout for new ones. If I could give new photographers any advice, location scouting would be at the top of my list. Don't rely on what you see on instagram and pinterest for location inspiration. Clients are also on those sites, and giving them something fresh and new that they haven't seen will impress them and show them how invested you are in your look and brand.
What is your favorite image you’ve ever taken, and why? (Include image please - we know tough question, but if you had to choose!)
My gosh this is nearly impossible. I have favorite images from shoots, but it is so hard to choose one overall. This image (below) is probably my favorite right now because I've loved seeing the way people have connected with such a simple image on social media. I had no expectations at the time when I took it, but for some reason, it has evoked a lot of emotions and for that reason it is my favorite right now.
