Fujifilm GFX 100 vs. GFX 100S

In January, Fujifilm announced a new medium format camera—the Fujifilm GFX 100S. This camera incorporates a majority of the same features found in the Fujifilm GFX 100 but in a lighter, more streamlined, compact design. We were able to test out the camera ourselves and instantly fell in love with the overall ergonomics and how it felt in our hands. Our number one question was what made this new 100S different than the original? Let's take a look!

A quick scan of the spec comparison chart shows that the GFX 100S still packs many of the amazing features its predecessor boasted with a few welcome additions. The image quality is practically the same with an identical 102MP CMOS sensor, ISO sensitivity, and image processor. It also comes with the recent Multi-shot feature which was recently added via firmware to the GFX 100. The autofocus system has the same 3.76 million AF pixels and feels similar to the autofocus system in the Fujifilm X-T4. Video specs are no different with un-cropped 4K 30p, except for the fact that record time has increased from 60 to 120 minutes in the GFX 100S.

Image Stabilization

If you're worried that the compact size of the GFX 100S would alter the image stabilization capability, don't fret. By using technologies incorporated in the X-T4 and X-S10 cameras, Fujifilm has improved the stabilization by 0.5 stops with a total of 6 stops compared to the previous 5.5.

Vertical Grip

To keep the compact size, Fujifilm decided to forego the integrated grip and vertical controls on the GFX 100S. Although, Fujifilm will be offering a smaller metal hand-grip if users are missing the feeling of a fuller camera experience.

Control Layout

Unlike the original GFX 100, Fujifilm added a space for a mode dial on the 100S compared to the contextual dial built into the top LCD screen settings. We enjoy the familiarity of the physical mode dial...

Viewfinder

When it comes to the viewfinder, the GFX 100 has an edge with its viewfinder being interchangeable while the 100S is fixed. Not only that, but it also boasts a resolution of 5.6 million dots and magnification of .86x compared to 3.4 million dots and .77x in the 100S.

Film Simulation

Fujifilm is known for its film simulations and the GFX 100S gained one more compared to the GFX 100 making the total 19.

Battery Life

Due to the compact nature of this camera it makes sense that it would require a smaller battery. Plus, without the grip, it limits the ability to utilize two batteries at once. The GFX 100S now takes the NP-W235, the same battery found in the Fujfilm X-T4. With only one battery, it can take up to 460 shots compared to 800 shots with double the batteries in the GFX 100.

Price

Now for one of the main differences—the price. The GFX 100S is now $4,000 cheaper then it's original counterpart retailing at $5,999.95, comparable to some high end full-frame cameras. It's even $500 cheaper than the recent Sony A1.

With Fuji cramming so many of the features that photographers loved from the GFX100 into an even smaller, more ergonomic camera, while shaving off nearly half the price, they've created a medium format for the masses that surely be in the running for top cameras of 2021.
