Tamron recently announced a highly versatile APS C mirrorless lens to suit the needs of photographers who want a compact setup. The Tamron 18-300 F3.5-6.3 is the first APS C mirrorless lens with a 16.6x optical zoom ratio, covering an expanded zoom range from wide-angle to ultra-telephoto.
Superzooms like this, which is a 27-450mm full-frame equivalent, have been popular with DSLRs and it's a nice addition to see one available for mirrorless cameras. Not only is this lens compatible with the Sony E mount, but now, for the first time, it will be compatible with the Fujifilm X mount cameras.
Tamron has had a favorable relationship with Sony for quite some time, and it's good to know Fujifilm has started to join the mix in terms of suitable APS-C mirrorless cameras. When it comes to DSLR lenses, Tamron has a fair amount for both Canon and Nikon camera mounts.
Ever since Canon and Nikon have started ramping up their mirrorless cameras, we've received quite a few inquiries about when Tamron will come out with lenses designed for Canon RF and Nikon Z mount. With Tamron coming out with a solution for Fuji users, this hopefully is a foreshadow of what is to come.
The Perfect Everyday Lens
Due to its versatile focal range, the Tamron 18-300 is perfect for everyday use as well as landscape, portrait, travel and even macro photography. For a lens with ultra telephoto range, having macro capability is pretty impressive. It has a minimum object distance (MOD) of 5.9" and a 1:2 maximum magnification ratio at 18mm. For situations, whether it be for stills or videos that require little to no noise, the AF system is quiet and agile with the Tamron VXD linear motor focus mechanism.
Weighing at approximately 1.36lbs, its compact design is ideal for travel and not too much of a burden to carry around all day. Like most Tamron lenses, it comes with moisture-resistant weather sealing for peace of mind. Plus, due to the special lens elements, it's designed to maintain high-resolution performance and high image quality. For a lens that can keep its sharpness throughout the entire zoom range, it's bound to be one of your most trusted companions, especially since it can be utilized in almost every situation.
For image stabilization, the Tamron 18-300 comes with vibration compensation, reducing image blur, especially in low-light situations. It also combats image shake when shooting at slower shutter speeds using an ultra-telephoto focal length.
The Tamron 18-300 for the Sony E-mount is available for sale today retailing at $699. The Fujifilm X-mount will be available for sale on October 28th, for the same price.
