With the white backing, some of your light escapes, creating more ambient light and less contrast. You can also turn the umbrella around for a harder light.
The Westcott Umbrella is strong yet lightweight, constructed of a fiberglass composite that is much more durable than the standard aluminum or steel frames you'll see with other umbrellas. The umbrella shaft is double walled for added strength, but it tapers down to 7mm, allowing you to use a variety of photographic lights, including Elinchrom heads. You won't find a single piece of plastic on the Westcott Umbrella—there are all metal tips and a metal top cap as well, so you'll have an umbrella to cast beautiful light on your subjects for years to come.
