Responsibly and Skillfully Photographing the Southwest
The April meeting for the Salt Lake Photographic Print Society will be held in the Pictureline Studio on April 11th from 7:00 P.M.- 9:00 P.M. The Board will meet in the same place at 6:00 P.M. Park inside the enclosure and enter from the southwest door.
I picked up my first camera at about eight years old. It was my Dad’s. It didn’t have any film in it, but I would go around clicking the shutter and pretending I was taking spectacular pictures.
Growing up near the Grand Canyon was wonderful. Jacob Lake Inn (our family business) is only 44 miles from the North Rim. I used to look through the travel magazines we sell, magazines like Arizona Highways, and imagine what it would be like to take pictures like that. I took many photographs but mine never looked as good.
Finally, I met Rodger Newbold. He is the director of photography at the Salt Lake Art Center. Taking a year of classes from him brought me, finally, into the world of quality photography. We have formed a great friendship that has lasted over twenty years. Since then it has been trial and error, calling Rodger with questions, and reading every book I could get my hands on.
I received a B.S. degree from the University of Utah and a M.S. degree from the University of Missouri, both in Civil Engineering. After several years of working in the construction industry, I went back to work with my family near the Grand Canyon. Living so close to many national parks re-motivated me to explore and photograph the area around me. The encouragement of several family members got me to display and sell my work.
I continue to work hard on my skills. I look at pictures I took a year ago and see that today I know how to make them better. I have enjoyed so much having people talk to me about the joy my pictures have brought them. I feel deeply blessed that I live so close to such beauty.
