Grand Canyon Workshop with the Salt Lake Art Center School

Experience photographing and exploring at one of "The Natural Wonders of the World," the North Rim of the Grand Canyon with the Salt Lake Art Center School.

We'll be spending six marvelous days photographing out in the beauty of the Grand Canyon, interweaved with some classroom time for investigating photographic concepts, digital workflow and printing in the conference center. We'll greet the sunrise from a spectacular viewpoint, shoot along the high plateau, and photograph sunset from one of the remote points on the canyon edge. We will also do day trips to nearby intriguing places and take an opportunity to photograph the blazing autumn color at its finest.

Instructors
In 1998 Rodger Newbold, Matt Rich and Michael Adams turned several years of informal fun trips into The "Grand Canyon Workshop," offered through the Salt Lake Art Center School’s Photo Department (now the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art).

Rodger began taking photographs in England in the late 60’s, became a teacher in 1980, was made Director of Photography for the Art Center in 1984, and has been a consultant to Kodak, Polaroid, Viscom Communications and The National Cowboy Poetry Program. He has had over 85 shows exhibiting his photographic work in the US, Europe and China, is represented in Salt Lake City by the Phillips Gallery and is an author and participant in ten books, the latest of which is 62 Laps Around the Sun. The book is a personal look at the Grand Canyon and Capitol Reef areas.

Matt Rich was raised on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon and spent years in the saddle working and appreciating the beauty of the area. Moving to the camera he began photographing the exquisiteness of the plateau and is now represented by the Sorella Gallery in Springdale Utah. Matt has spent the last sixteen years as a photographer and the best-qualified guide around for this workshop.

Mike is a highly skilled photographer and has taught classes in color darkroom procedures, Photoshop, and using the camera to produce stunning pictures since 1984. Educationally, he is a technical electronic communications Guru and one of the founding partners in Viscom Communications and former consultant to the National Cowboy Poetry Association. Mike brings a wealth of experience with the camera and in helping a photographer build a computer network and inkjet printing system.

Our goals are as follows:

  • To have fun and learn to use the camera without fear uncertainty or doubt.
  • To understand dynamic range and overcome its limitations.
