This week, we're thrilled to feature the multi-talented photographer and creative director, Amber Bird, in celebration of Mother's Day. With nearly a decade of experience behind the lens, Amber's journey in photography has evolved alongside her life's changing seasons. In our exclusive interview, we delve into her creative process, her sources of inspiration, and how motherhood has shaped both her approach to photography and her flourishing business. 1. Tell us a little about how you got started in photography and how that's evolved today.
I first got into photography almost 10 years ago (woah, that went by fast haha). For the first 5 years of my career I specialized in weddings, and couples. As my life shifted, becoming a mother, and interests changed, I have transitioned into doing exclusively creative portraits, and brand shoots. Making this change has given me so much creative fulfillment, and freedom to spend more time with my family.
2. Your portfolio showcases a vast range of styled shoots, from portraits to editorials. As a creative director, what do you pull inspiration from?
Creative Directing is the most exciting part of what I do. Although i love shooting alone, when I get the opportunity to take over the creative direction of the shoot, that really gets me stoked. I find myself really inspired by various time periods. For example, I am currently hyper fixated on the late 1970's and 80's. I love specific aesthetics. I also am heavily inspired by experimenting with different lighting, colors, textures, etc.
3. Most artists/photographers have experience hitting a creative rut, tell us more about your creative consulting and education.
Some times it can be REALLY hard to pull yourself out of a creative rut. I have worked really hard over the years to learn how to navigate times where I feel uninspired and blocked. As I have stepped into my coaching era, I have loved having the opportunity to help creatives push through these blocks and get excited about their business again. Soon I will be releasing a 10-day course where we will help you develop your own creative process, while experimenting with different ways to expand your creativity.
4. Collaboration seems to be a significant aspect of your work, evident from the variety of models and creatives featured in your portfolio. How do you nurture and maintain these collaborative relationships?
I would not be where I am today in my business without collaborating with other creatives. I will die on this hill haha. When collaborating with other creatives it is important to make sure you are respectful of everyone's time and talent. a true collaboration should not feel like a "job". I also try and support my fellow creatives as much as I can in their own businesses.
5. As a mom of two, how has motherhood influenced your approach to photography and your business?
Becoming a mother has made me notice the little things in life. sounds cheesy but just hear me out haha. My kids force me to slow down and see things at their level. Being forced to slow down, get taken out of the busy hustle that can easily overcome my life as a business owner has helped me view things from a different perspective, notice the beauty in life around me, and has reminded me of the importance of child-like wonder and play, even as an adult.
