Could you tell us about how FilmLaab originated? What motivated you to start your production company?
Growing up, I always wanted to be an entrepreneur. My dad was building companies my entire life. Watching him, I knew that it would be a difficult, but rewarding path, and I was up to the challenge. While studying at BYU, I was going into the advertising program when I was told that the program was all about job placement. They all but promised that I would get placed inside of a great agency. I then told them my goal was to learn, make connections, and start my own business. I was then told that if that's what I wanted, the program wasn't for me.
So, with that said, I dropped out of school and started freelancing. Over the course of the last decade; I have worked on hundreds of sets for different projects. I started a production company (Avenue Film Co.) that was eventually acquired by the tech giant Route, where I played the role of Director of Content/Media. Ultimately, the call of entrepreneurship never left me, and I bowed out from a life-changing salary offer and stock options to start FilmLaab.
I love going to war every day and working to build something. Beyond that, I love creating. Taking a problem and solving it through compelling content is my favorite thing to do. Telling stories, looking at things through a different paradigm, and bringing talented people together to create something new are what get me out of bed in the morning.
What does FilmLaab do?
FilmLaab is a video production company located in Salt Lake City, Utah, (Draper for all the Utah locals) that partners with forward-thinking brands and creatives to produce high-quality content and meaningful experiences through film and other creative outlets. We believe that a curated network of top-tier creative professionals and small/nimble teams are the future of content creation. By bringing together innovative filmmakers, designers, and writers while providing strong structure and processes, we can create high-quality projects that rival the traditional approach to film production. We also create self-initiated content, campaigns, merchandise, and other creative projects to help lift and redefine creative culture and current production methods. So, if you're ever in Salt Lake City, swing by our studio and say hi! We're always happy to talk shop!
Can you highlight some key partnerships or collaborations instrumental in FilmLaab's success?
Key partnerships have really come down to our incredible community of filmmakers, fellow entrepreneurs, agency owners, and friends who have stood by us and supported since day one. Without our strong social presence and existing relationships, we wouldn't be where we are today. We have pulled back the curtain to our process, the highs and lows, and told our story throughout the last few years and we believe it has made all the difference. The time for positioning yourself as "better than" is past. Vulnerability and community is the future.
Which project has been your favorite to work on?
Any time we get a call from DIME or the Utah Jazz we get excited. Because they are both partners that trust our creative vision and back us 100%. A personal favorite project of mine was something I created at Route with Jackson Averett called "The Unlikely Florist."
What has been the most challenging aspect of managing FilmLaab so far?
The challenge is figuring out how to properly maintain quality while still allowing individuals to grow and take ownership. Delegation is difficult, but necessary. And every time I've let our team run with something, they blow my mind.
