And then Nikon went wild…
We were lucky to attend CES 2014 and we couldn’t help but notice Nikon. Obviously we had to stop to "oooh" and "ahhh" over the soon to be released Nikon D4S, but our excitement didn’t stop there. We’ve received quite the influx of new Nikon products, so we’ve put together a quick guide of some of our favorite features of the new introductions to the Nikon family. And while we’re not trying to play favorites, Nikon’s latest entry-level model, the D3300 coupled with the new 18-55mm zoom lens, are ones that you don’t want to miss.
Nikon D3300
- 24 MP – The 24.2 million pixel count enhances detail to produce higher resolution, better quality photos.
- DX-Format CMOS Sensor – This sensor has no optical low-pass filter, which means you’ll avoid any moiré patterns and get the clarity you want.
- EXPEED 4 Image Processing Engine – Many of the D3300’s new advances are the result of upgrading to the new EXPEED 4 image processing chip.
- 18-55mm Zoom Lens – The new AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR II is 30% percent smaller than the existing 18-55mm lens meaning that camera balance improves on a smaller DSLR like the D3300.
- High Speed Shooting – At 5 frames per second, the faster continuous shooting enables users to capture things in motion.

- Retractable Lens – This lens is the first lens for Nikon SLR cameras (F Mount) that offers a retractable lens mechanism.
- Smaller, Lighter Design- At 30% smaller than the current 18-55mm NIKKOR lens, the new and improved Nikon zoom lens not only boasts greater optical performance, it adds better balance to your camera as a whole.
- Vibration Reduction – The VR function on the 18-55mm compensates for camera shake equivalent to a shutter speed 4.0 stops faster.
- Macro Capabilities – With a minimum focusing distance of .025 m, you can manually focus to get up close and personal with those macro shots.

While the D5300 is slightly bigger than the more entry-level D3300, the D5300 also benefits from the smaller size of the new 18-55mm NIKKOR lens, which is offered in this lens kit. With this 30% smaller 18-55mm standard zoom lens you can go from wide-angle to mid-telephoto and even macro.
Nikon CoolPix L-Series
Nikon introduced four new CoolPix L-series cameras, notably the L830 and the L30.
- Nikon L830 – High-power zoom at 34x allows the L830 to capture a broad range of angles from wide-angle 22.5mm to 765mm making the Nikon L830 great for portraits, landscapes, or close-ups.
- Nikon L30 – Don't let the L30's size fool you. Take quality photos with 20.1 megapixels and choose from 17 different Scene Modes to get creative.
Nikon CoolPix S-Series
In addition to the new L-series cameras, Nikon released five new S-series point-and-shoots cameras with up to 12x optical zoom and built-in Wi-Fi for easy transfer to tablets and smartphones.
- Nikon S6800 – The Nikon CoolPix S6800 offers the highest zoom at 12x optical zoom and 24x Dynamic Fine Zoom without compromising the high-resolution.
- Nikon S5300 – With an 8x optical zoom lens, users can take wide-angle 25mm to 200mm shots with the Nikon CoolPix S5300.
- Nikon S3600 – Available in six colors, the Nikon CoolPix S3600 allows users to add a wide variety of special effects to photos.
